Research in Alaska
On my research trip to Alaska I discovered just how truley wild this place is. It's pretty much like being on Mars in places, not that I've ever been to Mars. I can find subject matter almost anywhere i go, next to Africa, Alaska has to be next in line in favorite places to go. I very much enjoy places that the animal is in its living room and i'm just stopping in to say hello. Actually i really don't want them to know i'm there. As time goes on, the places on Earth that the animals do not know what a human being is becoming less and less, I enjoy traveling to these places. Alaska is one of the remaining areas for this. it is wild in Alaska, nature is definitly king.
The lighting, depending of the time of the year, is very different than what i am used to here in Florida. Most of the state is unihibited by the Urban lights and atmosphere. Such a powerful landscape. That makes powerful imagery. Six months of darkness and six months of light makes for unique colors associated exclusively with Alaska.
Salmon runs bring in wildlife to feed for the long winters. Endless mountains mixed with fertile sealife, big game, and exciting landscapes gives this area a wildlife artist endless amount of subject matter.
If I just painted Alaska, I would have a lifetime of nature imagery in just a few research trips.
I am so happy to be living in the time that we are. Untouched nature mixed with the technology waiting to be explored a world that hasn't totally been destroyed yet... that is what motivates me to be a wildlife artist. Alaska has untouched areas as we speak. Nature is wonderful, maybe it will be gone someday? Without being too preachy, I hope not.
Alaska inspires me.
