Research in Kenya
On my recent trip to the Maasai Mara I discovered just how amazing and inspiring Africa is. It's rolling terrain with spots of mountains, volcanos, and spacious plains, make for a beautiful backdrop for these very interesting animals and peoples. The abundance of wildlife mixed with the differences of my culture and theirs makes it so magical for me. Africa is my favorite place on the planet for doing the research for my paintings.
The parks are well managed but seem to be low on funds to manage them. With all the crime, disease, poverty and neighboring civil war, the country has limited resources to keep the parks running. It's a constant battle to find the funds to keep them operating smoothly. These parks are the lifeline for the animals and culture, I would surely hope this awesome place, as it is, would not be in jeopardy. If the tourism, hunting and donations were not available, I am assuming there would be irreversible damage caused by neglect. A place where the animals would not survive. Hunting sounds like it would be counter productive to the area but it generates millions of dollars for the protection of this fragile ecosystem.
The Masai have changed their ways because of the Parks. They now protect the animals that kill their cattle and gorge on the crops. Cattle are equal to money in their community. The parks have convinced them that it is better to help manage the areas habitat and wildlife to keep the lifestyle of the people from vanishing. They can earn money from tourist and hunters by working in the parks and by selling handmade goods for cash which in turn can buy more cattle, goats and things they need to maintain the heritage and lifestyle of the culture.
I went on this trip with a handful of artist for research purposes. John Banovich being the reason I went this particular time. John is one of the worlds most renowned wildlife artist. His knowledge of painting and experiences of Africa made it just a wonderful adventure. He's a great Artist/person with a beautiful soul.
I managed to take over 10,000 pictures of this amazing place.
Here are some of the images of my experience:
